Facilities

Built in 1969 and regularly upgraded, the school has state-of-the-art facilities with a gymnasium, new canteen, a café, Wi-Fi in all areas, refurbished toilets and a new science laboratory. The front of the school has been upgraded, solar panels provide renewable energy, trees have been planted and rain water is collected to economize water consumption.

Information Technology

The Mount Stromlo High School Library links in with a range of digital resources (including free World Book on-line encyclopaedia), has a large book stock as well as a substantial audio-visual and periodical collection.  The library is open throughout the day including before and after school. A well attended homework club operates Wednesdays after school.

Library services are managed through a computerised circulation system, cataloguing and enquiry facilities.  The Library has Internet and CD-ROM access with computers available for research.  All computers have software packages for word processing and electronic presentations.  Students regularly use computers to research and prepare assignments for presentation. The use of digital devices including tablets is encouraged, and a progressive mobile phone policy allows students to bring such devices to school, provided they are used for educational purposes only (no social networking).

Computers for student use are located in a range of areas:

  • six computer rooms
  • hubs of computers in various classrooms
  • notebook and netbook computers available in all learning areas
  • BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) is encouraged with student work stored on a USB or in the cloud 

Digital Projection Facilities are located in all learning areas.  All teachers have their own iPad and laptop computer. All students undertake a computer orientation course that spells out responsibilities for intrenet navigation and cyber safety. Devices are used in all curriculum areas as an additional tool for learning.

Technology Areas

This area includes two modern kitchens, a textiles room, computer rooms including a flexible learning space, wood and metalwork rooms, and a design drawing room.

Sport

Mount Stromlo High School is very ell supplied with outdoor playing fields and courts as well as having access to a large and modern gymnasium for indoor sports.  A dual climbing wall is included within the gym.  The school is within easy access to numerous sporting venues nearby.  Local recreational clubs and community organisations regularly book school facilities for a range of sporting, leisure or cultural purposes.

.Gym

The school quadrangles are marked out for various sports for students to play during class time or at break time and ample recreational space caters for adequate seating and team sports.

Arts Specialist Rooms

Mount Stromlo High School boasts two fully equipped Art studios, both adjacent to a functional wet area for clay work and drying facilities.  Facilities are available for many forms of visual and three dimensional art.  Students have access to kilns for clay work as well as painting, drawing and printing facilities.

Drama students use the SPACE – Stromlo Performing Arts Centre, with specialized lighting and audio systems, a stage and a large rehearsal area. 

The Dance area boasts a modern mirrored dance room comprising a state-of-the-art floor to perform on, and moveable walls to provide various rehearsal spaces.

Music teaching rooms at the school enable individual and group practice sessions.  Students access keyboards, drums and guitars for general music classes as well as a wide range of instruments for hire by students in the School's bands.  All students have rental access to woodwind, brass, string and percussion instruments.

Digital photography facilities include state of the art hardware and software which produce excellent winning media.

The Science wing includes eight laboratories an IT room as well as a hydroponic and aqua culture established inner court yard (with chicken and trout). A horticulture facility and outside plot area compliment the Science Faculty, as are several telescopes, including the Stromlo Dobsonian telescope.

 

Open Space for play areas

Students access several ovals to play sports at recess and lunch as well as tennis, netball and basketball courts which have recently been resurfaced. A security fence surrounds the school to ensure student safety.  A deco-plex surface for soccer provides a state of art surface.  Students have plenty of access to shaded and grassed areas, complete with tables and chairs.  Additional shaded areas provide areas for seating and performance areas for groups.

The quadrangle is marked for small ball games and the inner courtyard is available for student as a quiet area to meet with friends.  A large outdoor chess board is located in this quadrangle. 

 

The SPACE - Stromlo Performing Arts Centre

The SPACE is used for Drama classes and is also available for school assemblies and for community hire.

 

Classroom and corridor displays provide a positive learning atmosphere for students.  The whole school is Wi-Fi equipped.

Several new Flexible Learning Environmentshave been created to accommodate 21st century learning and teaching styles.  These indoor rooms are furnished with colourful, modular soft and hard furnishings, allowing students to arrange themselves to suit preferred seating or learning styles.

A Prayer Room is availabe to students who wish to pray

The Café simulates business studies and trains students in hospitality practices.

A substantially upgraded canteen offers a range of healthy foods and drink.
